Abstract

The Italian painting of the fifteenth century inaugurated in the history of art the advent of the geometric perspective that brought a new way of understanding space and the respective notion of belonging of man. This article starts from the Renaissance approach to problematize the symbolic unfolding of space throughout the history of art, with special attention to contemporary art. It proposes to examine it from two standpoints: the first considers space as a place of occupation, of affirmation of the representativeness of a certain cultural identity, fixing itself in the case of black art and in the post-colonial debate; the second considers space as a place in degradation that threatens the human condition, specifically in artistic production in dialogue with political and environmental crises.
