Resumo
Este artigo apresenta a interpretação do materialismo histórico oferecida em Karl Marx’s Theory of History (KMTH). Por meio da definição – e relação – dos conceitos de forças produtivas e relações de produção, defende-se a tese de que as explicações funcionais são centrais no materialismo histórico. Discute-se também a ideia de que toda história é a história da luta de classes. Na sequência, é apresentado um interlúdio pessoal que justifica a redação de KMTH, bem como as consequências decorrentes da sua publicação. Por fim, o artigo confronta as ambiguidades decorrentes da ideia de que as relações de produção entravam as forças produtivas, propondo, assim, uma versão revisada das formulações centrais do materialismo histórico.
