Abstract

Sometimes condemned as escapist, at other times praised as a tool of revolutionary liberation, art, in general, continues to be a burning topic both in academia and beyond. It is no surprise that Sérgio de Carvalho, director of Companhia do Latão, created in 1997, and professor of the Performing Arts course at the University of São Paulo, raises, right at the beginning of this book, a fundamental question: “What is the function of art? within the capitalist cultural apparatus?” (p.12).
