Abstract

In 1978, Luiz Alberto Moniz Bandeira, a former Brazilian political prisoner and one of the exiles of the coup that overthrew Jango, launched The João Goulart government: social struggles in Brazil – 1961-1964. There, the author's theoretical position was outlined, centered on the Brazilian class struggle, the contradiction between the development of productive forces and production relations and the frameworks of the analysis of imperialism. One of the chapters showed Operation Brother Sam and how the North American government, the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the State Department were fundamental in the construction of the 1964 barracks, the “dress rehearsal” of the coups in Latin America. Two decades later, the opening of documents from the United States Library of Congress brought the “endorsement” of Brazilianist researchers for what Moniz Bandeira had already said in his work. Starting from the study of Brazil, the refined analysis of international relations and in-depth research in archives are dedicated. As Ambassador Samuel said Pinheiro Guimarães, in the Preface to The formula for chaos, the work of Moniz Bandeira “is fundamental to understanding the past, present and future of South America and Latin America”.
