Abstract
This article explores some ways in which Gramsci’s analyses of the integral state and hegemony in the Prison Notebooks (1929-35) were interpreted, critiqued and developed during the 1960s and 1970s by three Marxists based in France: Louis Althusser, Christine Buci-Glucksmann, and Nicos Poulantzas.
