Hartmann and Lukács: a fruitful alliance

Abstract

The encounter between Lukacs’s Philosophy and the ontological thought of Nicolai Hartmann is a subject rarely discussed in philosophical historiography. However, the contact with the great ontological works of Hartmann played a decisive role in the
genesis of The Ontology of Social Being. The text proposes to clarify the deep affinity between these two distinguished thoughts. Hartmann cultivated the Perennial Philosophy, built above the socio-historical contingencies; Lukacs, a philosopher engaged in the battles of the century, built a work under the influence of the Marxian thought. Despite these differences, there are significant connections: the criticism of Husserl’s phenomenology, the criticism of the neo-positivist approaches and especially important restrictions on Heidegger.
