Abstract
“This is an important book”, wrote Semprún when prefacing The Crisis of the Communist Movement. He was wrong: it is a fundamental book. It remains, more than forty years later, the best instrument for revolutionaries to learn about a fundamental part of our history, that of the incredible sequence of revolutions in the first half of the 20th century. Beginning in 1905 with the first revolution in Russia, this cycle continued for more than four decades and its echoes were felt even in the United States' defeat in Vietnam. There is nothing similar in history. However, all revolutions were defeated.
