Abstract
This paper aims to demonstrate the theoretical distinction between the notions of “social classes” and “subaltern groups” from the Prison Notebooks of Antonio Gramsci. This distinction will involve a brief discussion with the notions of “social classes” developed, besides Gramsci and Marx, by D. Bensaïd, E. P. Thompson and N. Poulantzas, important authors on the topic that keep some proximity to the elaborations of Gramsci on the issue. Finally, I try to suggest an application of this distinction with some critical remarks about the “subaltern studies” and the final considerations about the text as a whole.
