Abstract
Charles Rappoport was born in Lithuania in 1865 to a Russian Jewish family. At a very young age, he joined the revolutionary socialist party. In 1887, he participated in an attempt to liquidate Tsar Alexander II, which was foiled by the political police. Among the conspirators was Lenin's older brother, Alexander Ulyanov, who was arrested and hanged. Rappoport managed to escape to France, where he joined the French Socialist Party, whose main leader was Jean Jaurès.
