Abstract

The LEF's internal debate published in number 11-12 of Novyi Lef (1927) sought to define the group's position in relation to the Conference on cinema called by the Bolshevik party for 1928. Whatever illusions its participants had regarding those responsible for politics, This debate is particularly interesting when claiming documentary cinema and rejecting “artistic” or “staged” cinema, questioning the role of staging in documentaries.
