Abstract

The article criticizes a certain interpretation of the Marxist theory to which the whole history of Marxism would have been a big misunderstanding. For some authors “traditional Marxism” has seen Marx only as a critic of inequality, private property and market anarchy, leading many interpreters to Stalinist and reformist deviations. Moishe Postone, one of the main representatives of this trend of thought considers capital as the only subject of the historical present, a system whose destruction seems impossible. The article criticizes this interpretation and its disregard of class struggle as the motor of historical change and reveals both the limits and the attraction of this one-sided and maimed analysis. Postone relies on the failure of the emancipatory movements of the twentieth century to trace an impressionist horizon, skillfully manipulating the Marxist concepts and concealing the historical reality.
