Abstract
This paper aims at tracing the original uses of the term “populism” in Latin American Marxism. For this purpose, I shall examine three polemics that occurred in the Latin American left in the late 1920s: between the Cuban Julio Antonio Mella and the Peruvian Victor Raul Haya de La Torre; between Haya and Jose Carlos Mariátegui and between the later and the representatives of the Communist International (CI) in the region. Analyzing the uses of “populism” in this controversies, I shall demonstrate that, similarly to what happened in the debates between the Russian revolutionaries of the late 19th century, the word was employed to
stigmatize political tendencies and authors that proposed a peculiar path for the subconti nent’s revolution, escaping from the limits of the CI’s orthodoxy. Thisuse of the term must be understood as part of the split between communists and nationalists, long lasting in the Latin American left
