Abstract

The dissolution of village communities by “enclosures” created the modern crowd. The neoliberal valorization of the individual, above any common form of life (except religious and military “communities”), inspires images that demonize the crowd. Photos of violent protesters are preferred by the capitalist media machine. But there are ways to think about an alternative vision of the crowd from below, with the help of recent photographic representations of the anti-capitalist crowd by Allan Sekula, Chris Marker and Joel Sternfeld
