Abstract

Written by Elsa Dorlin, specialist in the history of sexism and modern racism, Defend oneself: a philosophy of violence [Defender-se: a filosofia of violence], published in 2017, in English. The book is a type of self-defeating archaeology, passing through various historical episodes and contexts. First of all, there is a retrospective of colonial legislation as it is defined as something that can be defended. In the French colonies, determined activities were criminalized when they were subjugated by the colonial powers. Popular activities or festivities were tolerated in some cases for various events, lacking some resistance characteristics. O direito a defesa de si constitui sujeitos “matáveis” e sujeitos “defensáveis”: o fato de poderem se defense e portar arms dá to minorias brancas poder de polícia e juízes nas colonias. A self-defense was a privilege of nobreza.
