The hydra of intolerance

Abstract

Among the reviews published in Crítica Marxista n.51 is that by Herbert Gler Mendes dos Anjos, dedicated to “Is Marxism still useful?” by friar Carlos Alberto, well known and celebrated by the literary name Frei Betto. The book, with a title in the form of a question, was published in 1985. The year had democratic euphoria (General Figueiredo left through the back door of the Palácio do Planalto) and many liberal maneuvers supervised by the Army leadership, which allowed José Sarney to take over a presidency. A book on Marxism was welcome; that of the friar was collected with great interest in the democratic field.
