Abstract

This week's parliamentary debates offered little of interest. On the 22nd, Mr. Spooner moved, in the House of Commons, the repeal of the cash grants to the Catholic College in Maynooth, and Mr. Scholefield proposed an amendment “to repeal all legislative initiatives in force whereby State revenue is levied in aid of any ecclesiastical or religious purpose.” Mr.'s motion Spooner was defeated in the vote by 192 votes to 162. Mr. Spooner's amendment. Scholefield will not be brought up for discussion before next Wednesday, however, it is not unlikely that it will be withdrawn completely. The only noteworthy passage in the debate about Maynooth College was a remark by Mr. Duffy (Irish Brigade):1 He does not consider it completely impossible that the President of the United States or the new Emperor of the French would feel happy in renewing relations between those countries and the Irish priesthood.
