Abstract
This article discusses the relations between the working class movement and the unions, with special attention to the relation between Karl Marx’s project for the First International and the English trade unions. It also examines the causes that led to the end of the First International: the conflict with the anarchists, the rise of the Socialists parties and in particular, it stresses the failure of the Marxian position to use the trade unions in International politics. In the London Conference of 1871, Marx abandons his original international project and proposes the creation of an English Federal International Council. This research centered in Marx as an internationalist contributes in a concrete manner to point the reductive character of some readings of Marx as a theoretician of political autonomy and as an historical philosopher mainly associated with the power of emancipation of economic determination.
