Abstract
The journalistic articles by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels about the United States of America are extremely important materials in the duo's work as a whole. However, these articles have, until now, been addressed in a very limited way by scholars and activists. In Writings on the American Civil War, Felipe V. da Silva and Muniz G. Ferreira offer Brazilian readers the translation of 52 articles in which Marx and Engels analyzed the American Civil War (1861-1865). To help contextualize and understand articles published in the New York Daily Tribune, Die Presse and The Volunteer Journal for Lancashire and Cheshire, we have a foreword written by political scientist August H. Nimtz; timelines of the history of slavery in the USA and the American Civil War; introductory texts for each of the book's sections; appendices with messages from the International Workers' Association for presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson and, finally, two afterwords. The first, signed by Felipe Silva, presents an overview of Marx's journalistic work since his youth. In the second, Muniz Ferreira analyzes the way Marx and Engels interpreted diplomatic matters in the 19th century.
