Abstract
On this first day of October, 1961, I request admission as a member of the Communist Party of the United States. I came to this conclusion slowly and protractedly, but finally my mind is made up. In college, I heard the name Karl Marx, but I did not read any of his works, nor did I hear them explained. At the University of Berlin, I heard a lot from those thinkers who responded to Marx's theories, but, again, we didn't study what Marx himself said. Even so, I attended Socialist Party meetings and considered myself a socialist.
