Abstract

Once upon a time a hundred years ago. The Austro-German Social Democratic Workers' Party won the first election for the Vienna Local Council after the end of the war, on May 4, 1919, with 54% of the vote. One hundred of these seats in the Viennese City Council, which at that time had 165 seats, were occupied by the Social Democrats. From 1919 until February 1934, Vienna, a city with more than a million inhabitants and capital of the first Austrian republic, was governed by social democracy. Social democracy set an example in Vienna that still has effects today – in Vienna and elsewhere.
