Abstract
“Three Hard Years” could be a critical call about the last three years in Brazil, but it is a reference to one of Raymond Williams’ early writings on democratic education, entitled “Three Hard Years: a comment on tutorial classes”. In this sense, my proposal here is to present and discuss this and other writings on education and society produced by Williams in the first years after the end of the Second World War, at a time when socialism, adult education, exile and survival are keywords of similar meanings for the author, but no less problematic and in need of reflection in the light of his texts.
