Abstract
This article offers an analysis of Raymond Williams’ interventions in the British political debate of the 1980s – a context shaped mainly by the liberalizing economic policies and the dismantling of the bases of the Welfare State promoted by Margaret Thatcher’s administration. For this purpose it was decided to focus on the material that best summarizes Williams’ political and intellectual standings at that time: the book Towards 2000 (1983) and the texts collected at Resources of Hope (1989). In both texts, Williams presents the grounds for his project of a democratic socialism, conceived not only as the best response to the challenges at stake at that moment but also as the basis for a left politics adequate to the 21st century.
