Abstract
The first and still today the most important biography of Friedrich Engels of that we have was written by the German historian G. Mayer, who dedicated his best intellectual energy to a long work of elaboration begun before the outbreak of the First World War. As José Paulo Netto rightly highlighted in presentation of the Brazilian translation (by Pedro Davoglio) of this great book by
modestly simple title, “until the end of the second decade of the 20th century” does not there was a systematic study of the life and work of the man who, alongside Karl Marx, the great founder of historical materialism.
