Abstract

Underscoring the component of social criticism and anti-racism of Ford’s films, the commentary highlights an unemphasized aspect in the many critiques about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, a classic about the myth of the conquest of the west and the “frontier”: the invisibility of Pompey, the only witness who could clarify the authorship of the shooting that killed the gunman Liberty Valance.
