Abstract

Olympia (1863, oil on canvas, 130.5 × 190 cm, Paris, Musée d’Orsay) has the character of a manifesto – in the form of a poster. The painting corresponds to a corollary or synthesis of the various portraits of working women made by Manet (1832-1883) since the previous year, 1862.1 It is the formulation achieved of work for sale, therefore, of merchandise, as we will see.
