Enquanto a ciência política investigou os aspectos ideológicos, políticos, econômicos e até as motivações psicológicas que conduzem à guerra, a teoria socialista forneceu uma contribuição única ao destacar a relação entre o desenvolvimento do capitalismo e a guerra.
Há uma longa e rica tradição na esquerda de oposição ao militarismo que remonta à Associação Internacional dos Trabalhadores. Trata-se de um excelente recurso para entender as origens da guerra sob o capitalismo e ajudar as pessoas de esquerda a manter nossa clara oposição a ela.
Neste artigo, o autor examina a posição de todas as principais correntes (socialistas, social-democratas, comunistas, anarquistas, feministas) e intelectuais (Engels, Kropotkin, Malatesta, Jaurès, Luxemburgo, Lênin, Mao, Khrushchev) da esquerda sobre a guerra e suas diferentes formulações (“guerra de defesa”, “guerra justa”, “guerra revolucionária”).
